Service Plunge 2008

“Service Plunge” started this year in a thunder and lightning storm on Monday, June 23rd. Despite the bad weather, forty young people made their way to the ropes course in Hopkinton, Ma. We were lucky! When they got there the rain had stopped and the group was able to do the ropes course. Everyone had a great time and it was a wonderful community building activity!

On Tuesday, we washed a lot of cars at the Council on Aging (over fifty). Another group went to Fr. Bill’s where they made sandwiches and planted flowers. Groups also went to Cradles and Crayons on Tuesday and Wednesday and spent a considerable amount of time sorting out children’s’ clothing. On Wednesday some of the young people went to Bethany to visit the sisters and helped them with a cookout. A large majority of the teens also went to the Greater Boston Food Bank on Wednesday to sort food. On Thursday morning a group went to the Quincy Interfaith Social Services Agency to help unload a truck and sort some clothing. Additionally, on Thursday morning a small group also worked in the school with our custodian to help him move a classroom. We ended our week at the Council on Aging with a luncheon that the young people organized. They sat with the seniors and enjoyed eating lunch with them. We played the “Price is Right” and the seniors had to guess the price of gifts brought in by the young people. Mary Sheedy’s grand daughter (4 years old) held up the gifts and brought them to the seniors when they guessed the right price. In the end, everyone won and received a prize. We ended our day with Mass over in the Church. Fr. Bob did a great job and the air conditioning was wonderful!

Some comments  from the group:

At Bethany House, we sang for the sisters. Their faces were filled with joy – an image that I don’t want to forget.
Greg

I liked putting together the outfits for little girls at Cradles to Crayons but it was hard to have to imagine the unfortunate little girls who had nothing to wear but what I had set aside for them. The selection and quality of the clothes made me want to go out and buy them some new clothing.
Lauren

I saw the face of God in one of the homeless people at Fr. Bill’s, which was for me an unlikely place. This taught me that the face of God can be found in anyone.
Ryan

My favorite activity for the week was the Greater Boston Food Bank. I liked it because it was directly helping the community. It really hit me hard while we were packing the food because you can’t live without food.
Malachy

When I arrived at the “Service Plunge,” I was just thinking about completing the service hours. Now, at the end of the week, I realize that it is more than that. This week changed the way I view service – not as a thing to be completed but something done out of love.
Ashley

When I came to the “Service Plunge” this week, I didn’t know what to expect. I came in knowing only a few people and today leaving I realized that I met new friends that I will always be friends with.
Molly

I have several memories that stand out in my mind this week. The most prominent – the Greater Boston Food Bank. I was sorting through a large box of goods and realized that a lot of the items were things that my mom buys when she goes to the supermarket. It made me realize that people who are hungry are just like me. It made me feel closer to them. My experiences this week gave a face to the poor of Milton and Boston. They no longer seem alien.
Michael

When I first came to the “Service Plunge,” I didn’t think it was going to be fun but, now, at the end of the week I realize that I don’t want it to be over. I learned that helping out made me feel really good inside.
Kathryn

This is my second time doing the “Service Plunge.” Since it was my second time I knew what to expect but, by the end of the week, I felt moved and it made me feel good inside because I knew we made a difference in peoples’ lives this week.
Christine

Special thanks to our parents/chaperones who shared the week with us and to the forty young people who worked very hard despite the rain and humidity!
