St Agatha Middle School Science Curriculum
The focus
of science education at St Agatha middle school is
centered on the premise that actively involves students
with inquiry based, hands-on experiments so as to “cultivate
a positive attitude toward science and learning in general.” The
core of the curriculum is centered on the Earth, the
Biological and the Physical sciences. |
In earth science, students will focus
on four major themes seen throughout all areas of science: energy such
as the Earth‘s internal processes; structure
and scale that involves the study of rocks and
minerals as well as the earth’s water and air systems; systems
and interactions, particularly the foundations
of astronomy; and stability and change,
involving the changing surface of the earth over the years.
Students are encouraged to participate in class and will
be involved in laboratory activities as well as individual
or group projects and field trips. A significant emphasis
is placed on developing scientific process skills, which
include careful observation, formulating hypotheses, testing
and experimenting, organization of data, analysis of patterns
and results, and developing a conclusion. A continued transition
toward the more quantitative methods of scientific analysis
is fostered. These continue to be developed in the later
middle school years as well as the high school.
