St Agatha Parish
Renovation Project

Artifacts

2008
We continue to make steady progress on the renovation project in the Church. One of the most interesting aspects of the demolition phase has been uncovering artifacts from the early days of St. Agatha Church. For instance, when the old choir area in the rear of the Lower Church was removed, the contractor’s staff found a copy of the New York Times Sunday Magazine from March 9, 1919!
In the same area they also found a St. Agatha Calendar from 1930! It has an early picture of the Church taken from the area which is now the parking lot, but what is now the parking lot was then just an expanse of grass. This picture actually pre-dates the 1932 completion of the inside of the Upper Church. The exterior of the Church looks similar to its current appearance with a few changes. There are two small steeples towards the sanctuary end of the Church and the
entrance to the Church near the sacristy did not even exist. Underneath the picture is a very small calendar with a border that is made up of advertisements for local businesses, none of which exist today. There were two priests assigned to the parish at the time – Fr. Eugene Carney was the Pastor, and Fr. John J. McCarthy is listed as “Assistant Pastor”. These are just a couple of the historical items that have been uncovered. We will preserve all of them, and at some point they will be displayed for everyone to see.
