Faith Formation Handbook

St.
Agatha Parish

-
Dear Parishioners and
Friends,
As Catholic Christians,
we have declared ourselves to be disciples
/ followers of Jesus Christ. Part of
our call to discipleship is to continue to grow in our knowledge and love of
God – to be formed in our faith. Our faith
formation is a life-long process.
This year, the idea of living into our discipleship (becoming
better followers of Jesus Christ) will guide us through the year. We will look for ways to enhance those gifts
and talents which God has given to us.
In this booklet we
describe many activities, events, organizations, and opportunities which are
available to you throughout the year.
Others will be added as the year progresses. Periodically we will publish updated
calendars on our parish website (www.StAgathaParish.org), in the bulletin, and
in the back of the church.
As you can see from our
Parish Mission Statement and our Faith Formation Goals, we believe in God’s
love and we know that we are called to be disciples – all of us, not just those
who are officially designated as parish leaders. Let us continue this journey of faith and
growth together.
We hope to see you
often, throughout the year.

St. Agatha Parish is a Christian Community of Catholics from
Milton,
· Proclaiming and celebrating God’s presence on earth.
· Being open and welcoming to all.
· Reaching out to our sisters and brothers near and far.
· Providing opportunities for prayer, service, education and recreation.
In living this mission, we accept our responsibility for giving witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
We want every member of St. Agatha Parish
· to understand with every fiber of their being that God loves them and to live in response to that love.
· to know the depth, breadth, beauty and richness of the Christian Story and the Catholic Faith Tradition.
· to hear and understand the Word of God as revealed in Scripture and to internalize its essential truths.
· to participate fully in the Sacramental and liturgical life of the Church and to experience a meaningful private and communal prayer life.
· to live in right, loving relationships with God and others and to continue to grow in those relationships.
· to nurture and support each other and to be nurtured and supported in loving, faith-filled communities.
· to have life to the fullest and to live in ways that are life-giving to others.
· to make good ethical and moral choices that promote justice and peace.
· to realize all their God-given potential and use it in service for the common good.
These goals of holistic faith formation take a lifetime to accomplish and an entire community to achieve. What we do in faith formation programs is only a part of the greater whole. We, each as individuals and together as St. Agatha parish community, teach and contribute to the formation of others by the way we live, love, pray and serve.
The St. Agatha Parish Faith Formation Advisory Board is composed of a group of confirmed parishioners who foster faith formation at all levels and with all ages. They serve as an avenue of communication between the parish at large and the parish staff, particularly the pastor and Faith Formation Office. The annual selection process for new members takes place in late spring, and new members take their place on the board in the fall. For more information, contact Sr. Susan Czaplicki, ssnd, Staff Liaison to the Board, at 617-696-1388.
The St. Agatha Parish Faith Formation Advisory Board will support, enable, propose, and assess endeavors that encourage the lifelong faith formation of all parish members.
Goal 1: The Board shall promote the maturation of the Christian life in all its dimensions by fostering diversified opportunities for lifelong formation in faith.
Objective 1 Foster Knowledge of the Faith
Objective 2 Foster Liturgical Life
Objective 3 Foster Moral Formation
Objective 4 Foster Prayer
Objective 5 Foster Communal Life
Objective 6 Foster Missionary Spirit
Goal 2: The Board shall cultivate resources.
Objective 1 Cultivate Human Resources
Objective 2 Cultivate Media Resources
Goal 3: The Board shall assess the faith formation endeavors of the parish.
Objective 1 Assess Current Endeavors
Objective 2 Assess Future Needs
Intergenerational faith formation, or whole community catechesis, is a way of bringing the whole parish together to learn and share about God and our faith.
This style of faith formation:
· provides strong links between liturgy and catechesis (religious formation)
· provides opportunities for people of all ages and all types of “family” to come together to learn and share
· emphasizes faith sharing -- mixture of formal instruction and informal sharing
· can include faith festivals (gatherings) for all generations to receive information and reflect on it together
Realizing that we are all disciples of Jesus, we are all called and chosen by God, regardless of our age, St. Agatha Parish continues to provide opportunities for learning and sharing faith together in intergenerational settings. These opportunities are interwoven with our excellent programs which address the needs of specific groups – women’s groups, men’s groups, age-specific groups (children, teens, young adults, adults, etc.), groups based on a specific interest, etc.
Several activities currently scheduled include
This year our Faith Festival concentrates on the Sacraments
of Initiation – Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation – through which we are
fully incorporated into God’s family and the life of the church. These sessions will lead to a fuller
understanding of and participation in the Easter season and especially, the
Holy Saturday Vigil mass. All
parishioners are invited and encouraged to attend one of these sessions, whether
with your family, your household, or by yourself. Please plan on attending one of them:
Thursday,
March 29 evening
Saturday, March 31 morning
Sunday, April 1 afternoon/evening
Each session will include a meal, a variety of learning opportunities.
Attendance at one of these sessions is built into the schedule for our Faith Formation and Confirmation programs as well (see those sections for further info). The particular session you attend is up to you and your family / household.
More details will be offered during the year.
Glastonbury Abbey is bringing its store to us! They will bring a wide selection of their books, videos and religious goods to the parish for sale. They will be in the Cafeteria (school):
Saturday November 4 3:30 pm to 6:00 pm
Sunday November 5 7:30
am to 1:30 pm
Refreshments will be available as well. Come and do some early shopping for Christmas; use this as an opportunity to talk about faith with others; or just stop by and have a cup of coffee and visit.
Adult faith formation, by which people consciously grow in the life of Christ through experience, reflection, prayer, and study, must be the central task in this catechetical enterprise, becoming that axis around which revolves the catechesis of childhood and adolescence as well as that of old age.
Such lifelong formation is always needed and must be a priority in the Church’s catechetical ministry; moreover, it must be considered the chief form of catechesis. All the other forms, which are indeed always necessary, are in some way oriented to it.
Our Hearts Were Burning Within Us, #5 & 13
St. Agatha Parish offers faith formation opportunities for adults that include the many dimensions of Christian life – knowledge of the faith, prayer, liturgy, scripture, morality, service and development of community. All parishioners are welcome.
Please consult the parish bulletin for details and/or potential changes or additions to the following offerings.
While always welcome at any of our adult gatherings, you may feel a need or desire to get together with your peers as well. This year we are especially pleased to be planning some gatherings and discussion opportunities specifically for you. Come and be with your peers to share food and share faith. And, come to the general adult offerings as well.
If you have some ideas of what you’d like, or would like to be part of the planning group, please contact Fr. Bob Poitras (617-698-2439) or Sister Susan (617-696-1388), or both of them at YADA-Info@StAgathaParish.org .
Interested in talking with your peers about God, faith, doubts, fears, the good and the bad in the world? We are beginning an online list server (e-mail discussion group) for young adults. Exactly how it evolves is up to you!

Marriage CONTACT: The Rectory at 617-698-2439
At least 6 months prior to your wedding date, please contact the rectory to make an appointment with a priest or deacon. He’ll discuss Church teaching on marriage and help you look at your readiness for a lifelong commitment. He will see you once or twice more.
Engagement -- is a time to decide if your relationship is strong enough to become a lifelong marriage.
Your Wedding -- is very important but not as important as the life you’ll be leading afterwards. Compare the time and money you’re spending on your wedding day to how you’re preparing for your married life.
Marriage is a Sacrament -- just as you took a long time to prepare for First Communion and other Sacraments, marriage requires a preparation of at least six months; a year is even better.
You are the Ministers of Marriage – not the priest or deacon. This makes it important for you both to understand Church teaching on marriage so that you’re not just “going through the motions.”

Attend an engaged couple workshop. You must register for the workshop at least 2 weeks in advance. Space is limited. Contact St. Agatha Rectory (617-698-2439) for an application. Each session is four nights. You must attend all four evenings to receive a certificate of completion. The topics include Communication, Adjustments, Finances, Parenting, Sexuality, and Spirituality. The marriage preparation team consists of 25 married couples from our parish.

RCIA is a ministry that blends all the elements of the Mission Statement of St. Agatha Parish. Our primary goal is the formation of new members into our faith community. We do this by proclaiming and celebrating God’s presence on earth.
RCIA is first and foremost a ministry of hospitality and welcome to all members of God’s family. We provide support and education to those seeking Baptism, to Christians of other faith communities who wish to become Catholic, and to baptized Catholics who are seeking to complete the sacraments of initiation – Eucharist and Confirmation.
RCIA is a four-part process that includes opportunities for prayer, education, service and recreation. Liturgical Rites, usually celebrated at the 10:30am Sunday Mass, transition from one phase of the faith journey to the next.

Often we encounter people who have been baptized and received First Communion in the church but have not been confirmed. If you or someone you know is at the point in their faith journey that they wish to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation, or you would like to help with this process, please contact Sr. Susan. Formation sessions are scheduled as needed.
Catechetical sessions for parents are offered prior to their child’s celebration of First Penance and First Eucharist. These sessions provide opportunities for parents to reflect on Reconciliation and Eucharist and assist them in their responsibility of preparing their child for the celebration of these sacraments. Please see “Faith Formation Grades 1-5” for schedule.
Several formation opportunities are offered for parents and sponsors prior to their child’s celebration of the sacrament of Confirmation. Please see “Confirmation Preparation” for events and schedules.
Celebrating liturgy (mass, vespers, or other official prayer of the church) together is a crucial way for us to come together as a faith community. We invite you to come and participate.

Monthly drop-in sessions are held for people who have completed the 7-week Bereavement Support Group on an as-needed basis on the fourth Wednesday of the month from 7-8:30pm in the Rectory Conference Room. Please call Mary Gallagher.
The Bereavement Ministry is a healing ministry, and every Catholic by virtue of Baptism is called to participate. The “call” may be to assist the family in the preparation of the Funeral Liturgy, to serve as a bereavement minister, or to simply serve as a sign of God’s presence during this time of sorrow. Twelve of our parishioners are currently serving as members of our Bereavement Team. They make the initial visit offering the sympathy of our Faith Community, assist in the preparation of the Funeral Liturgy, and represent our Faith Community at the wake and funeral. Follow-up phone calls are then made and cards are send on special anniversaries as a reassurance of God’s compassionate love.
The team meets several times throughout the year to pray with, reflect upon, and review their ministry.

The focus of the program is on God’s love; the three and four-year-old curricula emphasize the senses while the five-year-old curriculum involves The Jesus Story and the use of parables to show God’s love for all. The children pray, play, sing and enjoy small craft activities. They also participate in several simple outreach opportunities throughout the year.

This year we have switched to the text series, We Believe, published by Wm. Sadlier, Inc. The books have perforated pages. When a lesson is completed, children will bring home those pages as well as a “Family Page” containing ideas and suggestions for use at home. This keeps parents informed about what their children are learning and offers resources for activities in the home.

add more information about the content of each chapter, the vocabulary lists,
prayers, etc. Please refer to the
“Resource” section at the end of this booklet for information about additonal
web sites appropriate for children and adults.
Wm. Sadlier Co., the publisher of the texts used in Grades 1-6, provides information and activities at www.webelieve.com. Catechists of all age groups can find valuable information at www.catechist.com.
Throughout the year we incorporate special activities and liturgical events. These events are offered during regular class times – 3:45 – 5:00 pm. Parents and other family members are encouraged to attend.

Preparation for First Penance (also called Reconciliation or Confession) and First Eucharist is a two-year process in Grades 1 and 2. Both sacraments are celebrated in the second grade.
NOTE: If you have an older child who needs these sacraments, please contact Sister Susan.
Preparation for these sacraments includes parent sessions (so that you may appropriately support your child(ren) in this process), rehearsals and special liturgies in addition to the ongoing instruction you child receives each week. Consistent attendance is critical to your child’s appreciation and understanding of the sacrament.
Through the Sacrament of Penance (also called the Sacrament of Reconciliation or Confession), we experience God’s forgiveness and peace. It helps us restore right relationships with God and one another.

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, . . .teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. Mt. 28:19-20
Catechists are disciples – men and women of the parish who are called by God to pass on the faith of the church, the faith that they live and believe. Are you called to be a disciple, a catechist?
St. Agatha’s supports our catechists in a number of ways. First, we honor and recognize them in a formal commissioning at mass. As a parish we send them forth to help form our children. Second, we support each other through catechist meetings. Third, we take advantage of programs offered by the Archdiocese, including the Catechetical Congress and various training programs.
We can only offer that which we have. The richer our own faith life, the more we have to offer to others in the parish. As catechists, we need to be even more aware of our own faith formation.
Catechist Meetings -- Attendance at these meetings is extremely important.

Those who with God’s help have welcomed Christ’s call and freely respond to it are urged on by the love of Christ to proclaim the good news everywhere in the world. This treasure, received from the apostles, has been faithfully guarded by their successors. All Christ’s faithful are called to hand it on from generation to generation, by professing their faith, by living it in fraternal sharing, and by celebrating it in liturgy and prayer. Adolescent formation for 6th, 7th and 8th graders is a catechetical undertaking that is part of a life long process of faith growth that supports the family’s primary role of forming young people in the faith.

Service to others, especially to the poor and disadvantaged, is at the heart of our identity as Christians. For a Christian, being a person of service is not an option. Participation in Christian service is one of the most important components of our program.
Each year classes spend some time doing Christian service outreach right here in our community. Last year many classes joined in with other outreach processes going on in the parish and helped out. A couple of classes prepared meals at Fr. Bill’s Place and other classes helped at My Brother’s Keeper. An important part of the outreach process is the reflection session and each class is expected to attend at least one reflection session to process their Christian service.
During the summer, a group called the
“Service Plunge” (in collaboration with the Milton Council on Aging) engaged in
a week of Christian service in the surrounding communities. During this week,
many hours of service are designated to the elderly in our community. This has
become an intergenerational project and many parents become involved in this
process. Additionally, last summer some groups went to Nazareth Farm in W.

Preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation at St. Agatha Parish is a two-year process with the sacrament being celebrated in the fall of grade eleven.
The Catholic Church welcomes new members through the sacraments of initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. Through these sacraments the Church celebrates the presence and action of the risen Jesus in our lives. The Sacrament of Confirmation reaffirms our baptismal promises and our commitment to the Catholic faith.
Eucharist is the heart and center of our Catholic community. As Eucharist is also a celebration of our unity with each other and with the risen Christ, we encourage the Confirmandi and families to come gather as a faith community at the 5pm Mass on Sunday evenings during the year. It is important for families who have children engaged in the Confirmation process to make every effort to accompany them on this journey.
Faith formation, service outreach and socialization are all
components in this process. Each year many young people engage in Christian
service outreach and we are proud of their commitment to make a difference in
the lives of the people they encounter.
The idea of living in a spirit of justice and service to each other is a
lifetime call. The ninth grade classes and their Faith Formation Catechists are
encouraged to do Christian service as a group and the tenth grade Confirmandi
are free to engage in an individual Christian service opportunity. This year we
will also be doing the “Service Plunge” and we will be applying to “Young
Neighbors in Advocacy” in
